New Mac

Currently, my home has 3 working macOS devices:

  • MacBook Pro M1 16 inch 2021: my personal laptop
  • Mac Mini, 2012: my home server…aka Mothership
  • MacBook Pro 16 inch 2016: my wife’s laptop, which essentially was my laptop before I upgraded to the M1 16-inch MacBook

Until very recently, I thought there was no need to upgrade any of the above devices. However, I have been proven wrong. My wife has expressed strong disappointment in the performance of her MacBook. If I am being honest (and I always should me), this was the reason, I upgraded to the M1 MacBook. At the time, my wife was on maternity leave and needed a laptop for basic browsing, mostly shopping. She has returned to work on a part-time basis and works from home 2 days a week. In short, it's time to upgrade her MacBook. Considering the current economic situation where everything is getting expensive, the new M2 Mac Mini appeared reasonably priced and is more suited for her use case. Despite currently using a MacBook, she almost always uses it connected to the LG Ultrafine display with an external keyboard and mouse. The Mac Mini is better suited and is cheaper.

Speaking of the increase in cost of living, a chicken souvlaki at my local souvlaki joint costs AUD23.90. I went in there this Saturday and walked off without a souvlaki. I do not recall ever not buying a souvlaki. It's one of my comfort foods. I suppose, in addition to upgrading my wife's MacBook, it's also time to find other comfort foods which are hopefully just as good but reasonably priced. Your suggestions are welcome!

The specs of the newest Mac are:

  • Apple M2 with 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
  • 16GB unified memory
  • 512GB SSD storage

It is the base model with the RAM upgraded from 8GB to 16GB and the storage upgraded from 256GB to 512GB.

My plan is also to also shift all the tasks that my 2012 Mac mini performs to this new Mac mini and sell the old Mac mini. I will also sell the 2016 MacBook Pro.

At the end of this process, I will only have two macOS devices in my home and my home would complete its transition from intel to Apple Silicon.

All in all, I am very excited to welcome a new Mac in my home. Estimated date of arrival: 2 March 2023.

The plan is to set up two users on the Mac Mini. One being my wife, and the other user will be set up to take over the functions of the aging “Mother Ship”. I am not entirely sure on a practical level how all this will work. Only time will tell.

Hold on... there’s more
